Today (5th of September 2015) makes it 100 days in office for the the new government in Nigeria; President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR), the man whom a lot has been said and speculated about even before the 29th of May swearing-in ceremony. So far one can ask of what has been done so far by the administration; a lot of Nigerians if asked will say nothing, others will say “yes he is working but he is too slow”. But let’s remember that the past administration’s left the country in complete fracas with international debts looming around, unpaid workers, uncompleted projects and contract and to worsen it, the fall in the price of black gold (crude oil); guessing that on accession to the seat of power what the president has facing him is way beyond the expected.
I believe before accession to power, the president has had all his agendas listed down, thereby helping him not to deter from achieving his set goals for Nigeria, most Nigerian feel that the president cares less about the suffering masses while others expect him to transform an almost broken country in a matter of days.
Achievements Since Inception to Power
So far, the new Nigerian government under the leadership of president Buhari can be recommended for two major things; number one being the war on terrorism which seems to be breaking the country apart, with the total reshuffling of the top echelons of the military and other security apparatus which was being politicized and drowning in corruption, and the shift of the military command center to Borno state which is the center of the terrorist group Boko Haram this boosted the morale of the Nigerian armed force and reviving the almost lost glory of the Nigerian military. Also the president move of completely involving neighboring nation into the war and making them understand that they are also a key player in the fight was a great step in ensuring Nigeria’s security, every country wants to feel superior and show strength.
The second thing is the steps he is taking towards fighting corruption as it has been a plague which has eaten through every single sector of Nigeria, the President who has been known to be a “no-nonsense” man has made it clear to Nigerians that he will not in any manner tolerate any form of corrupt practice especially in government establishment; he has directed ministries and government agencies to run a single account in order to have a total system of accountability, also with the recent firing of many top government official it is clear that he is here to work and he requires efficiency and accountability.
Anger of Nigerians Toward The New Administration
As the saying goes that every good thing has a negative side, so do Nigerian have some criticisms about the government, especially with His recent government appointments which are mostly coming from the Northern part of the country, this has provoked many Nigerians as they say that this are plans to divide the country and again the is not in line with the Federal Character Act which regulates appointments into government institutions to encompass Nigerians from each and every zone of the country. As a leader you need to work with people who will be loyal to you and at the same time have same visions with you, maybe this can justify these recent appointment and also the appointment of Mr. Kachikwu who hails from the South Eastern part of Nigerian as the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation which is a key sector of the government and the number one revenue generator of the nation, this goes far to show that the president is a visionary man who is only ready to work with accountable, qualified and hardworking individual. The president has also delayed ministerial appointments and has said he is not willing to work with just anybody but rather he is willing to work with technocrats, He is not in a heist to pick up people for appointment but rather to make sure the right choice are made and not people who will be picked and sacked in the long run.
The new government of Nigeria we can say so far is on track and working hard to deliver its said campaign manifesto. Since the governments inception into power Nigerian is some parts of the country can boast of a bit stable electricity supply, this proves that most of the country’s problems are artificial, also the president has set-up a committee in order to create a new national carrier of the country which will fly the country flag all over the world and revive the lost glory of the defunct Nigerian Airways.
It can be said that Nigerian has a government of the people, by the people and for the people, a government that will actually respond to its citizens plights on corruption and mistreatment.
God Bless Nigeria.
